Endotoxins are natural pyrogenic components found in the outer cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria, normally found in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of animals. The most common bacteria family to contain endotoxins is Enterobacteriaceae, typically present in the intestines. Stressors can produce a microbial imbalance in the GIT, stimulating the production of more endotoxins, whose toxic effects negatively impacts performance.
